Abstract Frequent changes in volleyball rules, which have occurred in recent years, resulted in radical transformations in volleyball. The herein article presents the results of the study leading to a precise determination of the time structure of matches, sets, actions and time outs in modern volleyball. The study was carried on the basis of the analysis of men's teams in the World League 2007 final tournament. The results confirm a crucial influence of changes in volleyball rules upon a duration of a match and all its components.
