Abstract The purpose was to study diet composition and habits in persons with arterial hypertension (AH). This population study was conducted in 250 (50% sample) hypertensives out of 500 subjects of a representative sample of men and women, Lugansk residents, in age 18 to 70 years. Nutrition features were studied by the method of 24-h questionnaire survey using moulages. Data of Food Balance sheets from annual statistical reference book of Ukraine during 1990 - 2007 years were analyzed. Hypertensives as well as other rest examinees showed imbalanced diet, rich in animal fats, simple carbohydrates and cholesterol. Hypertensives eat significantly more fat, less retinol and magnesium, than normotensives. The same nutritional disorders among unorganized populations and the patients with high blood pressure prove the necessity of undertaking national measures to improve the nutrition.
