Abstract The research undertaken in different types of pedagogical institutions of higher education aimed at analysing the content of teaching syllabi from the perspective of subjects developing pedagogical skills. The analysis was intended to indicate the differences in pre-service training between future teachers of physical education and teachers of other subjects and compare this type of training in public and private institutions. The research was conducted in the academic year 2010/11 and was based on a diagnostic poll used to explore electronic documents located on websites of 42 Polish institutions of higher education, including 20 public and 22 private schools. The research embraced teaching syllabi of undergraduate courses for future teachers of physical education and of other subjects. Only a quarter of the investigated schools offer their students a wider choice of subjects developing social and pedagogical competence.
